A combination of new BOBST visionary technologies will bring unparalleled levels of automation and digital transformation to folding carton converters seeking greater agility and efficiency in die-cutting operations.

A combination of new BOBST visionary technologies will bring unparalleled levels of automation and digital transformation to folding carton converters seeking greater agility and efficiency in die-cutting operations.

Flatbed die-cutter, MASTERCUT 106 PER, together with the novel digital recipe management tool, TooLink, epitomize the new BOBST vision, unveiled in June, for an entirely connected packaging production system.

Bodo Junge, Product Marketing Director Folding Carton at BOBST, said: “We have identified connectivity, digitalization, automation and sustainability as the cornerstones of packaging production now and in the future. Our vision for the industry is ultimately about enabling converters to adapt and respond quickly to brand owners’ constantly changing requirements.

“With these four cornerstones front of mind, BOBST is aiming to create a seamless packaging supply chain where machines and tooling communicate with each other to deliver optimum quality and performance, while reducing errors, waste and costs at every point. The introduction of new smart systems, such as our cloud-based workflow platform, BOBST Connect, and TooLink, complement and enhance plant and machine automation to levels not seen before.”

MASTERCUT 106 PER is a next-generation die-cutter with an even higher degree of automation and production capability than its market-leading predecessor. Its new design makes it today’s most highly automated and ergonomic die-cutter, encompassing a range of innovative features, to support the BOBST vision.

It is the world’s only die-cutter that can be set from just a single point of control and the automation of functions and settings, from ‘feeder to delivery’, means minimal operator intervention is required during operation. Stripping and blanking tools settings are now completely automated thanks to the new Matic Plus system which uses cameras to measure the position of tools and then aligns them automatically in register to the printed sheet. Jam detection and setting has also been automated on this new machine, as has the nonstop rack system in the delivery section.

Bodo Junge added: “MASTERCUT 106 PER demonstrates a new and unique level of automation. The new features enable a considerable setup time reduction of 15 minutes, allowing for faster make-readies – so critical to production lines today. Its exceptional level of automation makes this machine the most productive die-cutting equipment for short as well as long runs, enabling packaging manufacturers to be able to accept all types of jobs irrespective of run length.”

MASTERCUT 106 PER incorporates TooLink, a platform that connects the die-cutter with tooling to bring together the entire converting process. Production flexibility, job turnaround times and productivity are all positively impacted by this unique piece of technology.

The die-cutter is data-chipped with TooLink technology, creating a unique digital ID that enables instant recognition through the machine’s HMI. Chip-equipped tools are automatically detected by the machine and a production-ready job recipe is provided, leading to both waste and time savings of up to 15 minutes during job changeovers. It also allows automatic job recall, without any operator intervention.

“TooLink connects, digitalizes and automates converting,” said Alex Volery, Head of Tooling Division at BOBST. “It creates a true converting ecosystem that addresses the key production concerns of efficiency, control, speed, quality and sustainability. With TooLink and its suite of IoT applications, packaging manufacturers have complete oversight of their dies, recipes and job histories and access to a higher level of production data and insight.

“This combination of outstanding technologies is the BOBST vision in practice. For packaging manufacturers, it presents a real opportunity to future-proof their operations against the ever-changing market demands.”

PACK EXPO Connects adds additional international live demos and extends event hours.

Due to overwhelming demand, event producer PMMI Media Group has extended exhibit hours for the inaugural PACK EXPO Connects (Nov. 9-13), adding an additional hour to each day for attendees to visit suppliers’ showrooms and view live demos.

“Both customers and suppliers in the packaging industry look forward to PACK EXPO each year. As a machinery supplier, any virtual event linked with the PACK EXPO name is something we know we need to be a part of,” says Dustin Lee, director of sales, Morrison Container Handling Systems. “In our ever-evolving world, we have to be agile and continue to adapt. It may feel different but using this virtual platform to come together at PACK EXPO Connects is an opportunity to grow our business in this new innovative way.”

Long time PACK EXPO exhibitor Dorner Manufacturing is also intrigued and enthusiastic about the prospects of the web-based PACK EXPO Connects.

“As Dorner works to adapt our marketing strategy through these challenging times, selecting and then participating in the right virtual events is essential,” says Matt Jones, vice president, Dorner Mfg. Corp. “An event with the cache and name recognition of PACK EXPO is sure to bring the packaging community together to educate, enlighten and even entertain target customers seeking our products for their applications.”

With nearly 500 exhibitors already committed, live showroom hours will now run Monday through Thursday, 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. CST and Friday 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. CST. PACK EXPO Connects will bring together a full range of solution providers – minimizing the time and effort necessary for attendees to find answers to real-world packaging and processing challenges. PACK EXPO Connects has been designed to foster interactions between CPGs and suppliers with an intuitive, state-of-the-art virtual platform that makes live engagement easy. See list of exhibitors to-date, here.

“We are excited by the level of support we’re getting from exhibitors who are eager to share their technologies through this new platform,” says Dave Newcorn, senior vice president, digital and data, PMMI Media Group. “To ensure the greatest possible access for both exhibitors and their customers, we are expanding exhibit hours for PACK EXPO Connects. And, despite the expanded inventory, we expect live demo slots will fill up soon.”

International demo hours have also been added each day, to expand PACK EXPO Connects global reach. International demos will be broadcasting at 10:00 a.m. China Standard time (10:00 p.m. CT) and 10:00 am Greenwich Mean time (4:00 a.m. CT). These time slots will enable exhibitors to demonstrate their solutions and enjoy live interaction with attendees who reside outside the Western Hemisphere. In addition, all education sessions will be available on demand for international attendees to watch at times convenient to them. Spanish language closed captioning will also be provided for specific content and interviews with industry newsmakers.

“PACK EXPO Connects is shaping up to be the most innovative and engaging industry event this year,” says Jim Pittas, president & CEO, PMMI. “We are so happy that the research and effort invested in this debut event is receiving such an enthusiastic response. We look forward to bringing PACK EXPO Connects to the packaging and processing community.”

PET tumblers that CLASMADETM produces are sparkling as a glass. Proplastic Solutions, the United States, manufactures them with help of automatic PET stretch blow molding machine APF-3002 supplied by PET Technologies.

What makes PET glasses sophisticated? You can place an order and get PET flute or tumbler decorated with your logo, artwork, LED lights and dimensions that need for the available printed area. Then you choose the one that meets your drinking preferences. It can be 12 oz or 16 oz hefty tumbler for beer, wine or water and CSD or 8 oz tiny flute for champagne.

What produces the multiplicity? 20 minutes are enough to change the mold and switch for another format when we are speaking about the automatic PET stretch blow molding machine APF-3002 that produces a wide range of PET containers with minimum downtime. For the thick-walled containers intense 8-zone heating and air cooling system provide uniform temperature distribution within preform walls.

Where are the roots? Proplastic Solutions, with over 20 years of experience in bottles production, created CLASMADETM in 2018. The technical features of automatic blow molder APF-3002 and its stable operation attracted customer´s attention. The PET glass should be stemless and transparent as well as easy to customize and shatterproof.

The stylish plastic glassware is a pearl of close cooperation between PET Technologies, headquartered in Austria, and Proplastic Solutions, headquartered in the US. If you want to get a container with red, blue, green or white LED enter at the CLASMADETM website where you could create our own elegant flute or sizable tumbler step by step! Would you prefer?

Today one of the most discussed subjects worldwide is the digital transformation in manufacturing – the so-called Industry 4.0, an ecosystem of intelligent, modular, decentralized, virtualized and connected factories, that operates in real time via data processing and analyzing obtained from the pure Internet of Things (IoT).

Great. However, as my Italian father would have said: “Tra dire e fare, c’è di mezzo, il mare.” (“Between saying and doing lies the sea.”)

In mid-February of this year, the World Bank released a global report (The World Development Report 2018) on education, largely oriented by the Brazilian students’ performance in all categories measured by the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), a worldwide triennial study on general knowledge (mathematics, science, and reading) by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

Among the saddest conclusions, is the one that it will take for the Brazilian students a little more than 260 years – (yes, two hundred sixty years) – to achieve a reading proficiency equivalent to that of students from developed countries. Regarding mathematics, it will maybe take 75 years, if one were lucky.

It is clear that, after decades of social constructivism, wrong investments, evasion of funds, bad governance and applied Gramscianism (using the educational system for political indoctrination), the result was expected – a regression to the chipped stone times.

One buy a machine costing millions of Brazilian reais, dollars or euros, and who will operate it? Unfortunately, a byproduct of this education – a person who has great difficulty reading and interpreting a production order, a production process sheet, a product specification and a dashboard that addresses the set goals!

However, there is an even bigger problem: companies, while aware of the problem, prefer to invest little or nothing in the qualification of these people. A very common phrase I hear from customers is “It is better not to train a person, because once it becomes a qualified person, goes to work for the competitors.” In other words, it is better to have a bad operator and to produce less than expected, than having a trained person and motivate and retain that person.

It is for sure that the technology, in the next 260 years, will skyrocket. Until then, who knows, we will have what industry: maybe 10.0, 20.0 or 50.0. The consequences will be cataclysmic, if the mindset does not change, and if Brazil and the companies do not invest in the training of people from the educational base to the development of specific skills.

We do not even discuss the retrograde teaching base, a misaligned base with the skills of tomorrow – a matter addressed with mastery by friends like Martha Gabriel, Gil Giardelli and Murilo Gum.

From an accounting perspective, as well as from a physical and economic point of view, machines and technologies are becoming obsolescence very rapidly, and this will happen more and more. Unlike the open-minded qualified individuals, who possess critical thinking skills, who are creative and have a good education, will improve their talents the more as time passes by.

Industry 4.0 is of no use if the system operator – even if the individual is the Artificial Intelligence programmer, the robotic engineer, or the data scientist – has an educational base of 0.4. A sad and hard truth.

See you in the next article, and I hope the news to be more encouraging on this occasion.

Aislan
